Clark Howard Says You Can Save Hundreds On Clothes If You Try This One Thing – Action News Jax

ATLANTA — How much do you spend on a new coat? How about a pair of jeans?

In 2021, Americans spent an average of $1,754 on clothing and services, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Consumer adviser Clark Howard has found several ways to bring that number down.

Howard went shopping for deals at thrift stores with a few fashion-savvy and budget-savvy teens, who explain how thrift saves them hundreds of dollars on clothes.

One place where you can save money on clothes is at thrift stores – and thrift stores are really trendy.

Lily: Do I need to purchase an extended tire warranty?

Ansley and Lauren are among a growing number of teens and Gen Zers saving up.

“Yeah, you can find a lot of good brands here, like things like Anthropologie or Free People, that you’d buy there for over $100 maybe. And you can get it here for $20. It would be good for 20 years,” Ansley told Howard.

According to research by CouponFollow.comsecond-hand purchases save consumers more than $1,700 each year.

Lily: Should I tip on a cruise?

Dana Scott is co-owner of upscale consignment shop The Twisted Thread in Milton, Georgia. She told Howard that the longer an item sits on the rack, the lower the price.

“Do you see people you’ve never seen before? Who may have bought brand new from complete retail that suddenly shows up on your doorstep?” Howard asked Scott.

“Yeah, 100%,” Scott said.

Lily: Should I be worried about receiving mail at home with someone else’s name?

Scott said tighter inflation is forcing many shoppers to rethink where they’re spending their money.

“I spend more on groceries, more on gas, just, you know, to support my family. So much more expensive. I think a lot of women feel that,” Scott said.

Consignment doesn’t just save money – you can also earn extra money.

Lily: Is it worth buying high-end devices?

“You can take the clothes you don’t wear from your own closet and bring them here and they’re sold. And then it gives you money that you can use for shopping or to supplement your family’s income,” Scott said.

Ansley calls saving a win-win.

“When you buy something, you wear it for a while, and when you’re done, do you reuse those items?” Howard asked Ansley.

If consignment isn’t for you, stores like Goodwill and Plato’s Closet are great options for finding second-hand flights.

The good news is that you are becoming more and more experienced in saving. You will learn to mix and match items from different places, even mixing new items with used ones.

But the payoff is how much money you can save.
